Rooted Milkweed Cuttings-Asclepias curassavica. The fully-grown hickory horned devil has a brown head, dark green body, black prolegs and numerous spines.
It is listed as a species of special concern and believed extirpated in the US state of Connecticut.[5].
Additionally, fine setae feature along the black and white caterpillars back.
It's not quite as large as it will get but it's fairly close.
Apparently, this can be an insurance policy in species that pack such an important part of their life cycle into just a few weeks.
The adult moth is one of the most spectacular looking moths in the United States, easily rivaling Hyalophora cecropia and Actias luna.
Some pupae overwinter for two seasons, perhaps as an adaptation to variable and adverse conditions such as fires and flooding, or to maintain genetic diversity across generations.
Adult regal moths are enormous. Just before digging itself into the ground to pupate, the color turns from green to an translucent blue-green. 
The fat, turquoise-green moth caterpillar has fiery-colored, black-tipped arched horns, rows of menacing black spines, and an orangey-red head.
